Description: The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center broke ground on the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Building for Personalized Cancer Care on Wed., Nov. 16, making way for the 12-story, 615,000 square foot building.

The Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation gave MD Anderson a $150 million transformational grant in 2011 to accelerate the pace of personalized cancer therapies and pancreatic cancer research. From this grant, $100 million will be used to build the Zayed Building for Personalized Cancer Care next to the Texas Medical Center hospital, closely linking research to the clinics. MD Anderson will match those funds.

The grant, made by the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, is the largest MD Anderson has received and the largest single grant from a living individual or family foundation to an institution in the Texas Medical Center or any Texas university.

Located on the site of the former University of Texas Mental Sciences Institute, the facility is on a "fast track" schedule, slated for completion in August 2014.

The first phase of the Zayed Building for Personalized Cancer Care will include the construction of a shell and core of a research facility that fronts MD Anderson Boulevard. The building will have two research laboratory wings designed with an exterior public corridor that maximizes lab flexibility to meet new and evolving technologies. These wings will be joined to two adjacent office wings by a central collaboration space. Current plans identify a two-story podium of approximately 91,000 gross square feet, and lab and office towers of approximately 524,000 gross square feet. The initial scope of the project will include the building core, shell space and an interior build-out of approximately 218,298 gross square feet (labs, lab support, offices, conference/collaboration areas and building support services).

Occupants will include The Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Institute for Personalized Cancer Therapy, The Sheikh Ahmed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Center for Pancreatic Cancer Research, molecular diagnostics lab, histocompatability lab, and a pre-CLIA Molecular Pathology Research lab, among others.

Vaughn Construction is the construction manager for the project. HDR Architecture is responsible for the architecture and planning. Engineering is by E&C, Walter P. Moore and Rogers Moore. Interior design is by Courtney Harper & Associates.
