Description: Kinase inhibitors, a newer approach to fighting blood cancers, have been making major strides throughout 2011 for the treatment of CLL. Dr. Susan O'Brien, an investigator of this approach, gives us an update on the ongoing trials for CAL-101 and PCI-32765. She explains how they are not only very effective at fighting the CLL and can be taken orally, but how kinase inhibitors carry lower toxicity which allows them to be better tolerated, especially by older patients. Additionally, these drugs do not cause myelosuppression--the reduction of desirable cells in the blood--that is associated with chemotherapy treatment.
