Annual Meeting Journalist Wrap-Up: Why Survivors Should be Proactive with Their Primary Care Doctors
Description: Cancer survivorship carries with it the knowledge that, someday, a late-stage side effect may mean complications for a patient's health and possibly even another bout with cancer down the road. Therefore, it is critically important that a patient's primary care physician--the doctor that knows and cares for that patient over the course of his or her life--is kept in the loop and up to speed with regards to the cancer treatment. Patients must work to ensure that their physicians can recognize and help them manage these late effects and know when it's time for a return visit to the oncologist's office. Eric Rosenthal, a reporter for Oncology Times, filed this report from the 2012 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
