Description: Lymphedema, or chronic swelling, can affect head and neck cancer patients' speaking, swallowing, vision, breathing and self-image. Jan Lewin, Ph.D., leads an MD Anderson team that's the first speech pathology program in the United States to offer Complete Decongestive Therapy to manage head and neck lymphedema. Speech pathologists Brad Smith and Leila Little, who are certified lymphedema therapists, use compression bandaging, massage, therapeutic exercises and skin care techniques to help patients reduce swelling.
