Deborah Marshall of Mount Sinai Health System provides trends in financial relationships between industry and US radiation oncologists from 2014-2017: a cohort study.
The number of radiation oncologists receiving industry payments has not changed significantly over time. Despite increases in payments for consulting and honoraria, there have not been significant shifts away from inappropriate relationships overall. This suggests that awareness of ethical standards for industry relationships may be low in radiation oncology, or awareness of OP may not be widespread. Furthermore, transparency through OP alone may not alter physician behavior. Professional society engagement with OP, including the recent ASTRO conflict of interest policy changes recommending review of OP data, may influence physician awareness and shift behavior.
